We attended the 10th anniversary edition of Mary Jane Berlin, Europe's largest cannabis trade fair and festival, in June 2026. The event ran from 11 to 14 June at Messe Berlin, and our team was at the booth across the trade days to meet cannabis and CBD merchants operating in the UK and across the EEA.

Why this event matters for cannabis and CBD merchants

Mary Jane Berlin has grown from a cultural festival into the central commercial meeting point for the European cannabis industry. The 10th anniversary edition drew 75,000+ attendees and more than 500 exhibitors across the four days.

Germany legalised recreational cannabis in April 2024, and the country now holds the largest legal cannabis market in Europe. The commercial buildout (cultivation associations, medical operators, ancillary services, international brands launching German market strategies) has reshaped what the event delivers. Thursday 11 June was dedicated to B2B trade and conference programming for industry professionals, while Friday through Sunday opened to the public festival.

For payment processing conversations specifically, the event concentrated an unusual density of European cannabis and CBD operators in one venue. This makes it the right place to discuss card acceptance, acquirer relationships, and payment infrastructure in person.

What we heard at the booth

The conversations at our booth (and across the event floor) were focused less on market entry and more on operational maturity. Merchants scaling card acceptance across the EEA asked more precise questions:

1. How acquirer relationships are structured
2. How chargeback exposure is managed under scheme rules
3. How to maintain compliant operations as regulatory frameworks continue to evolve across Germany, the UK, and the wider EEA.

Three themes stood out.

Medical infrastructure is scaling fast

Medical operators across Europe are building out production, distribution, and pharmaceutical-grade supply chains. Payment infrastructure is a real bottleneck at this stage of growth, particularly for businesses expanding across multiple EEA jurisdictions with varying regulatory frameworks.

Compliance is operationally central, not peripheral

Traceability, quality assurance, and regulatory alignment are now standard operational expectations. For payment processing, this translates directly into underwriting readiness—merchants that have invested in compliance infrastructure are better positioned to secure and maintain card acquiring relationships.

Financial infrastructure is part of the ecosystem

Logistics, software, compliance tooling, quality management, and financial services are becoming just as important to cannabis businesses as cultivation and consumer products. Merchants that treat payment infrastructure as a strategic consideration, rather than an afterthought, are better placed to scale.

Our team met with merchants to discuss:
